Ingredients

For the hamburger steak
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef Choose ground beef with some fat for flavor.
  • 1 large egg Acts as a binder for the patties.
  • 1 tsp garlic powder For added flavor.
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper Adjust to taste.
  • 1 tsp salt Adjust to taste.
For the gravy
  • 1/4 cup meat drippings Butter can be used if drippings are not available.
  • 2 cups beef broth Can substitute with chicken or vegetable broth.
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour For thickening the gravy.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, garlic powder, egg, black pepper, and salt. Mix well and shape the mixture into patties.
Cooking
  1. Heat the meat drippings in a skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add the patties to the skillet, cooking until browned on both sides, approximately 4-5 minutes each.
  2. Once browned, remove the patties and set them aside on a plate.
  3. In the same skillet, add the flour to the remaining drippings, stirring to create a roux. Gradually pour in the beef broth, along with the Worcestershire sauce and the beef bouillon cube, stirring continuously until the mixture thickens.
  4. Return the browned patties to the skillet, spooning the rich gravy over them. Allow everything to simmer together for an additional 10 minutes.
Serving
  1. Serve warm, generously ladled with gravy.

Notes

Pairs well with mashed potatoes, rice, or sautéed vegetables. For a twist, serve as an open-faced sandwich on a toasted bun.
