Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 1 1/3 cups Whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup Mixed grains Optional for added texture
  • 1 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Sugar
  • 2 1/2 tsp Dry yeast
Wet Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup Water Warm, to activate yeast
  • 3/4 cup Buttermilk Can be substituted with regular milk and vinegar
  • 1/3 cup Honey
  • 1 tbsp Butter Melted, for brushing

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, dry yeast, and sugar. Allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In another bowl, mix the all-purpose flour, whole wheat flour, mixed grains, salt, and honey.
  3. Add your frothy yeast mixture and buttermilk to the dry ingredients, stirring until everything is nicely combined.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes, or until it reaches a smooth texture.
  5. Place the kneaded dough into a greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm area for about an hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  6. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  7. Once risen, punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and transfer it to a greased loaf pan.
  8. Cover the loaf and let it rise again for 30 minutes.
  9. Brush the top with melted butter and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and it sounds hollow when tapped.
  10. Allow it to cool before slicing for the ultimate enjoyment.
