Ingredients
  

For the Hamburger Steaks
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 onion finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs Can be replaced with crushed crackers if desired.
  • 1 egg
  • to taste Salt and pepper
For the Gravy
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce Can substitute with soy sauce.
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 2 tbsp olive oil For cooking the patties.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.
  2. Form the mixture into evenly sized patties.
Cooking
  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until browned and cooked through.
  3. Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside on a plate.
  4. In the same skillet, sprinkle in the flour and stir well to create a roux, letting it cook for about 1 minute.
  5. Gradually add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring continuously until the gravy thickens to desired consistency.
  6. Return the patties to the skillet, allowing them to simmer in the gravy for a few minutes for increased flavor.
  7. Serve the dish hot with your choice of sides.

Notes

Best when served with classic mashed potatoes or rice. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for 3-4 days. Reheat with a splash of beef broth.
